Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Isn't it true that anyone can write a resume? A: Well, yes and no. True, anyone can write a resume. But not everyone can write a good resume. Most people, when writing resumes, tend to take the humble approach. That is, they don't really highlight their real strengths as much as the probably should. Many times, people will gloss over their less tangible skills. They may focus on such technical things as typing or programming skills, but overlook their strong problem-solving or people skills. An objective professional can make these things shine on a resume, giving you an edge over your competitors. Q: I've heard that resumes longer than one page are frowned upon. Is this true? A: No, this is false, but only under certain circumstances. If you have relevant experience that absolutely should be on a resume, then you can have a second page on your resume. You should make your resume as brief as possible, while still highlighting your accomplishments. A 2-page resume that really impresses is better than a one-page resume that says nothing about you. Q: Are cover letters really necessary? A: Yes, they are. Cover letters do a few things to help you land an interview. First of all, they let the hiring manager know which position you are applying for. Secondly, it gives you a chance to introduce yourself, and express what type of job you are looking for, your salary requirements, and any other information you'd like the potential employer to know which may not be apparent on your resume alone. Q: Can't I just go to a recruiter or staffing agency and let them do my resume for free? A: No. Staffing agencies are there to service their clients, not job candidates. Most recruiters will not take the time to help you with your resume, unless they are specifically targeting it to a specific client. Also, most recruiters will only spend about 15-20 minutes with you in person total, so they really don't get a sense of who you are, what you're looking for, what your strengths are, etc. So they can't really give you an in-depth critique of your resume, nor can they really give you any really good interview advice. Q: Is it a good idea to prepare for an interview? A: Yes it is. Good preparation can help you overcome your nervousness and will prepare you for some tough questions. Q: How long should I expect an interview to last? A: Typical interviews can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the position, the number of interviewers you will meet with, any testing that may be involved, etc. Q: I've been asked to attend a Behavioral Interview, what exactly is that? A: Behavioral interviewing is a technique that employers use in order to not only see if the individual has the necessary skills, but if he/she can learn the necessary skills rather quickly and does the individual have the "potential" to succeed at their job. As opposed to generic interviewing where the employer asks about your career history. Q: I have been asked to complete occupational testing, what exactly is this? A: Some companies
